Materials for Evaluation
Strategies for Formative Evaluation:
One-to-One with Subject-Matter Expert (SME):
The instruction will be presented to an instructor who has taught Technical Writing at Virginia Tech within the last five years. After walking the SME through the instructional unit, the designers will prompt the SME to fill out the survey below and provide feedback about the learning experience. This survey will be used to facilitate more in-depth discussion about revision opportunities for the designers.
One-to-One with Target Learner (x3):
The instruction will be presented to a member of the target learning population, namely an engineering student at Virginia Tech. After walking the student through the aspects of the instructional unit, the designers will prompt the learner to fill out the survey below to provide feedback about their learning experience and allow for any additional elaboration or response from the learner.

Strategies for Summative Evaluation:
Previous Field Trial: A previous version of this unit was taught during Kayla McNabb's Technical Writing course in the summer of 2015. The instructional unit presented here was influenced by the feedback that was derived from a summative evaluation survey for the course that heavily focused on this assignment. The questions from this original survey are listed below.
Future Field Trial: The revised instruction will be presented to a section of Technical Writing students in a coming semester. The instructor will follow the plans detailed in this lesson, and the learners will complete the assignments described. After the unit is completed, the learners will complete the same survey used in the formative evaluation process to judge both the quality of the revised unit and the improvement over previous iterations.
Technical Writing (Summer II 2015) Summative Survey
1. Describe what you liked about the class or what you think worked well.
2. Describe components of the course that you would like to see revised or adapted to better suit students.
3. Describe any aspects of the class that you did not like or thought were not useful to your educational goals.
